Heat treating is key to most manufacturing process, so the equipment used is just as important as the process itself. This course provides an overview of essential aspects associated with various furnace units used to heat treat metallic parts. For your benefit, the course will take place in the classroom as well as two guided factory tours.
The Lost Foam Casting (LFC) process, which enables easy and cheap casting of complex geometries, is being considered in order to replace the traditional Die Casting (DC) process. However, the lower cooling rates associated with the LFC process  result in a relatively coarse microstructure in terms of Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS) and particle sizes  ,  .
The lost wax process is accurate for small components, but as the casting size increases it becomes rapidly poorer, eventually becoming as bad as low technology sand casting at large sizes. Gravity die casting and lost foam casting show intermediate performance.
